Hegra

Hegra, also known as Mada'in Saleh, is a Nabataean archaeological site located in the AlUla Governorate in northwestern Saudi Arabia. This site is the oldest preserved urban settlement in the Arabian Peninsula, and is distinguished by its magnificent Nabataean architecture dating from the first century BC to the first century AD..

Location and History 

  • Hegra is located about 20 km northeast of Al-Ula, between towering rocky valleys. 
  • The city was founded by Nabataean civilization, which was famous for its skills in trade and architecture, and was an important stop on the trade route between southern Arabia and the Levant.

Architecture and tombs 

  • The site contains about 131 rock-cut tombs, adorned with elaborate stone facades decorated with Nabataean inscriptions.
  • The facades display a variety of designs, such as columns, decorative carvings, and arches, and reflect the development of Nabataean architectural skill.. 
  • The tombs were intended for the elite, with differences between small tombs and huge royal tombs.

🕒 Appointments and reservations 

Tours are available year-round, with regular schedule updates. Advance reservations are recommended to ensure availability. Tours usually run from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m..

  • Navigation: Self-driving is prohibited within the site; Designated means of transportation must be used.
  • Clothes: It is preferable to wear comfortable clothing suitable for desert weather, with a hat and sunglasses.
  • Shoes: Wear comfortable and appropriate shoes for walking in sand and rocks.
  • Food and Drink: It is recommended to bring your own water bottle; There may be no sales outlets available on site.
