Jabal Ikmah

An open library in the heart of the desert 

Jabal Ikma, nicknamed the “Open Library,” is an archaeological site located in the Al-Ula Governorate in northwestern Saudi Arabia. It is distinguished by the presence of hundreds of rock inscriptions and carvings dating back to ancient civilisations, making it a living witness to the history of the Arabian Peninsula.

 

🕰️ History and inscriptions 

Most of the inscriptions at Jebel Ikma date back to 1st century BC, and were written in ancient languages ​​such as:

  • DadaismWhich was prevalent in the Kingdom of Dadan. 
  • Lahyaniya: which was linked to the Kingdom of Lahyan.
  • ThamudicWhich was used by the people of Thamud. 

The inscriptions vary between religious, commercial, social, and travel writings, providing a comprehensive vision of the lives of the ancient peoples in the region.. 

 

🌍 Global recognition 

at 24 May 2023, included UNESCO Jabal Ikmah is in the “Memory of the World” register in recognition of its historical and cultural importance. This site is considered one of the most prominent archaeological sites in the Kingdom, and contributes to understanding the development of writing and the Arabic language.
